The 49ers Open 7,800 Miles From Home. The Ten Days After Matter More.
The 49ers open the 2026 season on Thursday, September 10 against the Rams — in Melbourne, at 5:35 p.m. Pacific, which is Friday lunchtime in Australia.
It is the first of two international games on their schedule. They also play the Vikings in Mexico City in Week 11.
The ten-day gap is the story
San Francisco do not play again until September 20, at home against Miami. That is ten days between Week 1 and Week 2, and it is the single most important fact about this trip.
The punishing version of an international opener is a short week on the other side of it. This is the opposite. Whatever the flight costs them physically, the schedule gives them a week and a half to pay it back before anyone sees them at Levi’s Stadium.
The preparation week was already compressed
This is a Thursday game, which means the practice week was short before anyone boarded a plane. The team’s decision to travel early is the obvious counter, and the right one — but it also means the week happened in a different hemisphere on a different clock.
Two rosters that have not hit anyone in seven months, a neutral field, and an unfamiliar kickoff time. Week 1 is the least predictive week of the NFL season in ordinary conditions. These are not ordinary conditions.
It still counts the same
There is a temptation to treat a Melbourne opener as an exhibition with consequences attached. It is not.
The Rams went 12-5 last season and lost the NFC Championship Game. The 49ers went 12-5 and lost in the divisional round. These two finished second and third in the same division, separated by nothing, and they meet again in Week 14 at Levi’s.
A game in Australia in September is worth exactly as much in January as a game in Santa Clara.
The health questions are unresolved
Nick Bosa is returning from an ACL tear. George Kittle‘s availability has been reported as a question this week.
Both would matter in any game. In a matchup where the margin between these teams has been a possession for three years running, they are the difference.
What to actually watch for
Not the result. A loss in Melbourne is not evidence that the season is broken, and a win is not evidence that it is fixed.
The useful information arrives on September 20, when San Francisco play Miami at home on a normal Sunday after a full week of rest, and it becomes possible to see what this team looks like when nothing about the circumstances is strange.
