Bay FC Have Failed to Score in Nine of 22 Matches
Bay FC have been shut out nine times in 22 league matches this season.
That is the season. Not the defending, not the schedule, not the table position — the fact that in more than a third of their games, the club did not score at all.
The blanks
Washington in April. Gotham in April. Utah and Chicago in May. Portland in May. Houston and Gotham again in July. Chicago again in August. Washington again in August.
Two of those finished 0-0, which are points. The other seven were defeats, and five of them were by a single goal.
Six one-goal defeats
Bay FC have lost 0-1 to Chicago, 0-1 to Houston, 0-1 to Gotham, 0-1 at Washington, 1-2 to Kansas City and 2-3 at Utah.
Convert one chance in four of those and the club has six more points. Six points would move Bay FC out of 15th and into the middle of the table. The margin between this season and an ordinary one is that narrow.
It is not a defensive problem
Thirty goals conceded in 22 matches is a shade under 1.4 a game and comfortably mid-table. Boston Legacy have conceded 40. Chicago Stars have conceded 53.
Bay FC’s goal difference of -8 is the best of the bottom three by a distance, and it is the number that separates this club’s situation from the two below it. Chicago need a rebuild. Bay FC need a forward.
What they look like when it works
Twice this season Bay FC scored three, and both came against the North Carolina Courage — currently third in the league. A 3-1 win in Carolina in March, and 3-0 at home in July.
Those are the only two matches all year in which this attack looked like a functioning one, and they came against one of the best teams in the NWSL. That is a strange pattern, and it argues for a side capable of far more than it produces most weeks.
The number to fix
Twenty-two goals in 22 matches. One a game, second-worst in the league, and the single figure that has to change before anything else about this club does.
