Bay FC Concede Like a Mid-Table Team. They Score Like the Worst One.
Bay FC sit 15th of 16 in the NWSL table with 22 points from 22 matches, eight games left and a playoff place 12 points away.
The record says a bad team. The goal difference says something more specific than that.
The defense is not the problem
Bay FC have conceded 30 goals in 22 matches — a shade under 1.4 a game, and comfortably mid-table. Boston Legacy have given up 40. Chicago Stars have given up 53.
Their goal difference of -8 is better than both clubs below them and not far off Houston (-4) and Orlando (-5), who sit 12th and 11th. On the evidence of what they concede, Bay FC belong in the lower middle of this league rather than the bottom two.
The attack is
Twenty-two goals in 22 matches. Exactly one a game, and only Chicago’s 13 is worse across the league.
That number explains the season better than any other. A team that concedes at a mid-table rate and scores at a bottom-two rate turns matches that should be points into matches that are not. The pattern is all over the results: 0-0 against Utah, 1-1 against Boston, 0-1 to Chicago, 0-0 at Chicago, 1-0 over Houston, 0-1 at Washington.
Six of those results were decided by a single goal. Turn a handful of them and the table looks entirely different.
What they did to North Carolina
Twice this season Bay FC beat the North Carolina Courage — currently third — and both times comfortably: 3-1 in Carolina in March and 3-0 at home in July.
Those are the only two matches all season in which this team scored three. Against one of the best sides in the league, on both occasions. That is not the profile of a club that cannot play; it is the profile of a club that has produced its best football rarely and against good opposition.
The math on the playoffs
Eight teams qualify. Seattle Reign hold the last place on 34 points with the same eight matches remaining that Bay FC have.
Twelve points is not mathematically impossible with 24 available, but it requires Bay FC to win at a rate they have not approached all year while Seattle collapse. The realistic version of the run-in is a club playing for next season.
What the run-in is actually for
The remaining schedule is hard in a useful way: Seattle on September 12, then Denver, Racing Louisville and Orlando at home, Kansas City away, and Portland, Angel City and San Diego to close.
Five of the eight are against teams currently in playoff position. For a club whose problem is scoring against organized defenses, that is a genuine measure of whether the attack has developed — and the answer arrives before the offseason in which Bay FC have to decide what to do about it.
This is a third-year club with a defensive base and no reliable way to score. That is a smaller problem to solve than the one Chicago has.
